STEFAN SAGMEISTER
Finally Something Good at the
Gaîté Lyrique,
Paris

Isn't it time we got optimistic?

13 years after The Happy Show, Stefan Sagmeister returns to the Gaîté Lyrique. Faced with an anxiety-inducing flood of information, the artist pushes back against the narrative of collapse: drawing on data from the UN, the World Bank and other global sources, he transforms numbers into striking visual works that show humanity is moving forward more than we tend to think — without denying the struggles of the present. An invitation to step back, without naivety, and rediscover the will to act.

About the exhibition
An antidote to the old saying "things were better before."

01
The Artist

New York–based designer and two-time Grammy winner, Stefan Sagmeister is known for his visual work for the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed and Jay-Z. Founder of his own studio in 1993, he is now one of the most influential graphic designers of his generation, exhibited at MoMA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He now explores themes of happiness, beauty and human progress.

The concept

Using data from the UN, the World Bank and other global and national databases, Sagmeister turns numbers into striking installations — antique paintings, clothing, sculptures — that bridge past and present on subjects from conflict to health, climate and migration.

A program to go beyond

The exhibition doesn't stop at the artworks. Every week, workshops and talks extend the reflection and turn observation into action. A program designed for everyone, turning the visit into a starting point rather than an ending — so you leave with more than just images in mind.

Location

Gaîté Lyrique, 3bis rue Papin, 75003 Paris

La Gaîté Lyrique, a cultural venue of the City of Paris, aims to respond to the cultural, social, democratic and climate emergency through the Fabrique de l'époque project, led by Arty Farty, ARTE France, makesense, SINGA and Actes Sud. Since 2023, the Fabrique de l'époque has established itself as a true antidote to insularity, always in service of popular cultures. It is a space open every day to support a new generation of talent, break down barriers between practices and audiences, and in doing so build new narratives on a European scale. Hand in hand with artists, activists, thinkers and changemakers, La Gaîté Lyrique – Fabrique de l'époque offers new ways to create and act together.
